Mobile devices do more than just keep us connected, they contain valuable information, like contacts, passwords, pictures and videos that cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. Most people who purchase mobile phones turn down the insurance option, thinking I’ll never need it. Wrong.

According to research by Asurion, in North America alone, nearly every 2 seconds, a phone is lost, damaged or stolen. Most losses, theft or damage claims occur within the first 6 months of activating a phone. And if you are one of the statistics mentioned, then you know that to replace that phone without insurance you will have to pay full price for a phone of equal value. No incentives, no yearly upgrades. Just pay for it flat-out at retail price.

I learned this not just from Asurion, but from my own experiences. My daughter and I have shared a phone since she turned 16, over 3 years ago. And in that short amount of time, I have replaced our phone at least 5 times. One time lost, one time stolen and the other three times damaged. It was run over by a car, dropped in a swimming pool and the third time dropped on a concrete driveway and the screen broke. And on my budget, that’s a lot of money spent that could have been prevented if only I had purchased an insurance plan. Just so you know, I now am the happy owner of a mobile device insurance plan. I learned my lesson.

Asurion is trying to get the word out to save millions of consumers from the dreaded gut-wrenching crisis, when a phone is lost, stolen or damaged.  Learn the facts about Mobile Mishaps below.

I left my phone laying on the stairs and my boyfriend stepped on it and it was broke. Then I had to search and search for a new phone that I could afford

I put my phone in a grocery bag so I would not drop it carrying bags in the house. To my dismay, a soda bottle had burst and my phone was soaking in Mt. Dew! My phone had drowned :)

My very first cell phone was a Sony Erickson something-or-other. I was just a teenager and I just thrilled to have my own cellphone. Well, somehow it ended up getting wet (I still have NO idea how) and got water damage. I couldn’t even turn it on. I was so sad that I had killed my first cell phone. Thankfully, I DID have Asurion insurance and got my phone replaced with just a small deductible, but it was definitely a lesson learned. Now I always keep insurance on my phone. Always.
